The ultimate 2020 guide: getting a POS machine in Nigeria

“Sorry, I don’t have enough cash. Do you take POS?”. I probably answered “No” to this question around 20 times, before I used my brains and decided to get a POS machine for my store in Lagos. If you’re still stuck in the phase of answering “no” to your customers, I created this guide to help you. In my previous post, I covered POS machines specifically for GTBank customers, so this post focuses on all licensed sources – banks or not.

If your customers are already asking if you have a POS machine, then I don’t need to explain why you need one because good business people listen to what customers want. Apart from offering your customers a better service, a POS makes it easy to account for sales as it blocks loopholes for financial mismanagement by sales staff. Before going any further, it might be worth discussing how a POS works to make sure we are on the same page.

Getting a POS machine in Nigeria

What is a POS machine?

A POS (or Point of Sale) terminal is an electronic device which is used by businesses to accept card payments. Generally, POS machines are designed to accept payments from all the major card issuers and they play a huge role in reducing the amount of cash changing hands within the economy.

POS machines are a great investment for businesses for a number of reasons:

  • More sales. Buyers buy more products without the psychological impact of having to physically ‘feel’ the amount of cash they are about to part with. How many times have you seen shoppers pick up something, count the cash, and then drop the item back because “it is not within the budget”?
  • Customers have more flexible payment options
  • Reduced queues. No need to count large sums of cash
  • Security. Your store holds less cash and is less of a target for theft
  • More opportunities to earn money. You can offer customers a “cash back” service

Features of a POS terminal

  • Payments for purchase
  • Balance enquiries
  • Accepts all Cards (Visa, MasterCard, Verve
  • Other Value Added Services (Bill Payments, Air time vending)
  • Merchant has access to view transactions online real

How does a POS machine work?

How a POS machine works

Rather than a POS machine, you may have heard of an MPOS or Mobile Point-of-Sale instead. An MPOS is basically a smartphone, tablet or dedicated wireless device that performs the functions of a cash register or electronic point-of-sale terminal (POS terminal) wirelessly. These tend to be more versatile and offer lower charges (subsequently higher profit margins to the business).

With mPOS, businesses can accept payments without being plugged into a single location. This improves the customer experience by speeding up service and wait times and offering multiple payment options.

It is also cheaper and cost-effective, as it allows small business owners to accept payments without having to invest in an electronic register or pay to support the software. The mPOS technology is significantly less expensive than a traditional POS and it relies on cloud-based subscription models that boast low initial costs and monthly maintenance payments.

Where to get a POS for your Business

Now that you know the importance of accepting card payments from your customers, it is important to get these machines from the right and accredited channels.

According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS), the first place you should attempt to get a POS machine from is your bank. You should hold a business account with your bank, as commercial banks should be your first point of contact when it comes to getting a POS machine, for a number of reasons:

  1. Your bank is a registered institution licensed to carry out financial transactions
  2. They offer you high confidence and low risk
  3. You’re sure of continuous customer support on issues relating to the use of the machines
  4. You can get all you need under one roof at the bank’s physical location
  5. The process is straightforward

Needless to say, different commercial banks have their unique requirements when it comes to getting a POS for your business.

Banks that offer mPOS solutions

First City Monument Bank

The FCMB mPOS operates on Bluetooth enabled smartphone devices. First, you will need to download the mPOS app and then install it on your mobile device – all this takes a few seconds. The app is launched each time you need to perform a transaction [e.g. receiving payment] on the terminal.

The PinPad (usually known as Chip reader) is connected to your mobile device through Bluetooth in order to process a transaction. The transaction type, amount and account type [savings or current] are captured on your mobile device while the PinPad only allows the cardholder [usually your customer] to insert his card and enter the PIN.

The status of the transaction can be subsequently generated through a Bluetooth enabled printer. You also have the option to send an electronic receipt sent to specified emails.

Are there licensed POS providers in Nigeria who are not banks?

Yes, they are. Commercial banks do not have a monopoly on the POS issuance framework. Other accredited companies that can issue you a POS variant for your business are:

1. PAYPAD

PayPad is a pioneer technology framework dedicated to offering solutions to financial space through its mPOS solution – which enables businesses to receive payments via their smartphones. It offers better transaction connectivity than the regular POS and also allows you to keep track of transaction details and reduce paperwork.

The PayPad solution is a tested, trusted and reliable solution that is currently being deployed by 10 of the major banks in Nigeria with its service tailored to each bank’s individual requirements and needs.

How it works

The PayPad device is paired with an application on your smartphone via Bluetooth or NFC connectivity. Its features include e-marketing, smart printing, payment acceptance, seamless integration, multi-location support, issuance of invoice and order.

Receiving payments with PayPad is as simple as typing in the transaction amount on the app on your smart device. Optionally, you can also add a description of the item sold or service rendered. The transaction amount you enter is instantly sent to the PINpad, giving the customer visual confirmation of the purchase. The customer then inserts his card and punches in their PIN to permit the transaction. Once the payment is processed, the customer is notified to remove their card and the transaction is completed with receipts sent to the customer’s email address and a copy is saved on your transaction history page.

Creating an account is free on this platform, provided you have an internet-enabled smartphone. You can start the process here. Signing up for PayPad is entirely free and requires nothing more than your basic business details and name of your bank. In less than 48 hours after signing up, a representative will get in touch with you
